Storage, Winterizing and Pump Protection Between Seasons

Pressure washers are seasonal tools, and most of them fail during the months they are not being used. Water left inside a pump expands when it freezes and cracks the housing, seals dry out, fuel turns to varnish, and hoses take a permanent set in whatever shape they were coiled. None of that is dramatic enough to notice until the machine comes out in spring and will not build pressure.

Freezing is what actually destroys pumps

A pump holds residual water in passages that cannot be drained by tipping the machine. When that water freezes, it expands, and the expansion has nowhere to go. The result is a cracked pump head or a split valve body, and manufacturers commonly exclude freeze damage from warranty coverage because it is preventable.

The exposure is not limited to outdoor storage. An unheated garage, a shed, or a detached workshop will all reach freezing temperatures in most of the country. The machines most at risk are the ones that live outside permanently: the Giraffe Tools Grandfalls Plus+ wall mount with 100 feet of hose and the Grandfalls PRO with a 100 foot retractable hose are mounted installations, and a mounted machine in a cold climate needs its winterizing procedure treated as mandatory rather than optional.

The end of season sequence

Manufacturers describe variations of the same steps. Flush the detergent system first, by fitting the low pressure soap tip and running clean water through the injector until the stream is clear, so no chemical dries inside the passages. Then shut the machine off, close the water supply, and squeeze the trigger to release stored pressure before anything is disconnected.

Disconnect the supply hose and the high pressure hose and drain both. Tip the machine to let the pump empty as far as it will. Pull the trigger a few times with everything disconnected to push the last of the water through.

What remains is handled with a pump protectant, sold as pump saver or pump antifreeze, which is introduced at the inlet and displaces residual water while leaving a lubricating film on the seals. This is the step that prevents both freeze damage and the dried out seals that cause a machine to lose pressure after a long idle period. It is inexpensive relative to a pump.

Machines that store easily and machines that do not

Physical size decides whether indoor storage is realistic. The Westinghouse ePX3500 listing gives 16.5 inches tall and 19 pounds, which fits a closet. Full frame gas machines do not, and their winter storage location has to be planned rather than assumed.

Hose management is the other half. The Sun Joe SPX3001 is listed with an onboard reel for its 20 foot high pressure hose, and the Karcher K5 Premium with a pressurized hose reel. A reel keeps a hose in a wide loop rather than a tight fold, and a hose stored folded develops a permanent kink at the crease that restricts flow for the rest of its life.

Nothing in the corded electric listings is exempt from this. A compact machine is just as easy to leave in a cold shed as a large one, and it holds water in the same places.

Gas machines have a fuel problem as well

Gasoline degrades in storage. Ethanol blended fuel separates and absorbs water, and what is left behind gums carburetor passages. Manufacturers commonly offer two options: treat the fuel with a stabilizer and run the engine long enough to circulate it through the carburetor, or drain the tank and the carburetor bowl completely.

Engine oil should be changed at end of season rather than at the start, because used oil carries acidic combustion byproducts that sit against bearing surfaces all winter. Listings note that these machines arrive with fluids in them: the Simpson CM61083 listing states that engines are factory tested and may contain residual fuel or oil, which is a reminder that a new machine is not a dry machine.

Every machine in the gas listings is affected by both problems, fuel and freezing, so the two procedures run together at end of season rather than separately.

Fuel storage carries its own restriction. A gas pressure washer with fuel in the tank does not belong in a living space, near a water heater, a furnace, or any pilot light. And the rule that applies during use applies during any test run before storage: a gas engine emits carbon monoxide and must never be run indoors or in a garage, including with the door open. Starting a machine briefly to circulate stabilizer counts, and it has to happen outdoors.

Pump type changes what spring looks like

The distinction between pump architectures matters most after a long idle period. Axial cam pumps, used on machines such as the DeWalt 61147S, are described in these listings as maintenance free, which in practice means they are sealed and not intended to be rebuilt. A seal that has dried out on an axial pump often means replacing the pump.

Triplex plunger pumps, such as the CAT unit specified on the Simpson ALH4440, are generally serviceable, take their own crankcase oil, and can be resealed. Owners of triplex equipment should check pump oil condition as part of the same end of season routine.

One specification worth carrying into spring: the Greenworks Pro GPW3001 states a maximum inlet water temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Thawing a cold machine with hot water from a tap exceeds that limit and damages seals. A machine suspected of having frozen should be brought up to temperature in ambient air and inspected for cracks before water is introduced at all.

Nozzles, guns and the small parts that get lost

Quick connect tips are the parts most often missing in spring, and replacing them is harder than it looks because orifice size is matched to the flow rate of the machine rather than to the color of the tip. Storing the set together, in the onboard holders most machines provide, avoids buying a green tip that turns out to be sized for a different unit.

Tips should also be cleared before storage. A tip left with grit dried inside it produces a distorted spray pattern the next time it is used, and the pattern is easy to mistake for a failing pump. Clearing is done with the supplied wire or a fine pin, with the machine off and the system depressurized, and never by looking into the orifice or probing it with a finger.

Battery and cordless units

Battery machines such as the DEWALT DCPW550B still hold water and still freeze, so the drain step applies. The packs themselves are the additional item: lithium packs are commonly stored at a partial charge rather than full or empty, indoors at moderate temperature, and separated from the tool. Manufacturer guidance on storage charge state varies, so the battery documentation governs.

Before the first use of the next season

Inspect the high pressure hose along its full length for bulges, cuts, and abrasion, and replace rather than monitor anything questionable. Check that the inlet screen is clean. Purge air from the system by opening the water supply fully and squeezing the trigger with the machine off until water runs steadily, and never let the pump run dry. Test the GFCI on a corded machine before it is put to work. Whatever comes out of storage, the jet must never be aimed at a person or an animal, because a high pressure stream can cause an injection injury that looks minor and is a medical emergency. The manual for the specific machine governs its storage procedure.
