Pressure washer listings are sold on one number. The number is PSI, it is printed in the largest type on the box, and it is the least complete way to describe what a machine will do. Cleaning is work, and work needs both force and volume. PSI supplies the force. GPM supplies the volume. A machine that is strong on one and weak on the other will disappoint on exactly the jobs it was bought for.
What PSI and GPM each contribute
PSI, pounds per square inch, is the pressure at the nozzle. It is what lifts a bonded layer off a surface: the paint film, the algae, the road grime that has dried onto a wheel arch. Raise PSI and the jet gets more aggressive at the point of contact.
GPM, gallons per minute, is the water flow. Flow is what carries the loosened material away and what covers ground. A high pressure jet at low flow strips a narrow stripe and then leaves the debris sitting where it fell. That is why a 3,000 PSI machine at 1.1 GPM can feel slower on a driveway than a 2,300 PSI machine at 2.3 GPM, even though the first one has the bigger headline.
The catalog carries examples at both ends. The Greenworks GPW2300, listed at 2,300 PSI with 2.3 GPM, is a flow forward machine. The cordless end of the range runs the other way, and a unit such as the DEWALT DCPW550B at a listed 550 PSI and 1.0 GPM is built around portability rather than throughput.
Cleaning units: the figure that combines the two
The industry shorthand for combined output is cleaning units, calculated by multiplying PSI by GPM. It is a crude index, but it is far more informative than PSI on its own, and it exposes listings that lean on one number.
The Greenworks Pro GPW3001 listing is a useful case because it publishes the arithmetic. The title reads 3,000 PSI with “2.0 GPM Max / 1.1 GPM”, and the bullet points quote 3,300 cleaning units. Multiply 3,000 by 1.1 and the answer is 3,300. Multiply 3,000 by 2.0 and the answer is 6,000. The cleaning unit figure the manufacturer publishes is built on the lower flow number, which tells the reader which of the two GPM figures the manufacturer treats as real.
Why a max PSI figure is not a working pressure
Several listings in this catalog state the condition attached to their headline number, and the conditions are worth reading closely.
The Westinghouse ePX3100v listing quotes “2100 Max PSI (at initial discharge)” and “Up To 1.76 GPM (without nozzle at minimum pressure)”. Read the parentheses. The pressure figure is measured at the moment of discharge, and the flow figure is measured with no nozzle fitted at minimum pressure. Those are two different operating states, and neither is the state a person cleans in. The Westinghouse ePX3500 listing uses identical wording around 2,500 max PSI and the same 1.76 GPM ceiling.
Other listings simply footnote the claim. The DEWALT DWPW2400 is described as having “2400 max psi*” and “1.1 gpm**”, and the CRAFTSMAN CMEPW2100 uses the same asterisked construction at 2,100 MAX PSI. The asterisk is doing real work. It signals that the figure was captured under a defined test condition rather than in normal use.
A third group states peak outright. The ACTIVE 2.0 listing describes 1,800 PSI as peak pressure alongside 2.0 GPM of flow, which is at least an honest label.
When a single listing publishes two different numbers
Contradictions inside one listing are common in this catalog and are worth naming rather than resolving. The Sun Joe SPX3000 listing states 2,030 PSI of working pressure with 1.2 GPM in its bullet points, while the specification table on the same listing gives 1.76 gallons per minute. Both figures come from the manufacturer. There is no way to tell from the listing alone which applies to which operating condition, so both belong in front of a reader rather than one.
The Karcher K1700 listing has the same split, quoting a maximum of 1.46 GPM in the product title while its specification field reads 1.2 gallons per minute.
Contradictions of that kind are not confined to the corded machines. On the gas side, the Simpson ALH4440 title states 4,400 PSI at 4.0 GPM and then states 4,200 PSI in the same line, and the PowerSmart DB1051 listing advertises 2.5 GPM in its description while its specification table records 5 gallons per minute, a figure that reads far more like an inlet supply requirement entered in the wrong field. Naming both numbers is more useful to a buyer than quietly choosing one, because the choice would be a guess.
Certification marks are the closest thing to an audited number
Two marks appear on listings in this catalog and both mean something specific.
PWMA certification, from the Pressure Washer Manufacturers Association, indicates that the PSI and GPM claims were submitted to independent lab testing against a published standard. The Greenworks GPW2003 listing states that it is rated in accordance with PWMA standards at 2,000 PSI and 1.2 GPM from a 14 amp motor.
CETA certification appears on gas equipment. The DeWalt DXPW3400PRNB-S listing describes a CETA certified rating of 3,400 PSI at 2.5 GPM. Sun Joe uses a similar construction on the SPX3000-XT1, which is described as producing 2,200 PSI of certified rated pressure and 1.1 GPM of certified rated flow. Certified rated is a narrower and more useful claim than max.
When the arithmetic does not survive a check
Some listings in this catalog publish combinations that do not hold up against basic hydraulics. Water horsepower is PSI multiplied by GPM divided by 1,714. A 120 volt appliance on a household circuit has a hard ceiling on input power.
The Le Hao Tool listing advertises 5,000 PSI with an 1,800 watt motor, and quotes 3.3 GPM in the title against 3.5 GPM in the body text. At 5,000 PSI and 3.5 GPM the water output alone would be above 10 horsepower, or roughly 7,600 watts, from a motor drawing 1,800. The REAPP listing pairs a 3,000 PSI claim and 2.4 GPM with the same 1,800 watt motor. Readers should treat those headline figures as marketing rather than as performance they can plan around, and should compare them against a PWMA or CETA rated machine before deciding.
Reading the catalog with both numbers in hand
The corded machines in the electric pressure washer listings cluster between roughly 1.1 and 2.3 GPM, which is the practical ceiling for a 15 amp household circuit. The gas powered listings sit between 2.4 and 4.0 GPM because an engine is not bound by that circuit. That flow gap, not the PSI gap, is the main reason gas machines finish large flat areas faster.
Safety does not scale with the headline number
No PSI figure in this catalog is safe to aim at a person or an animal. A pressure washer jet can drive water and contamination through skin and cause a serious injection injury, and the entry wound can look trivial while the damage underneath is not. Eye protection and closed footwear are standard manufacturer instructions. Where a gas machine is involved, the engine emits carbon monoxide and must never be run indoors or in a garage, including with the door open. The operating manual for the specific machine governs, and it takes precedence over any figure printed on the box.
