Description

The Instant Pot Duo Plus is a three quart electric pressure cooker with 15 built in programs, a redesigned steam release switch and a cooking progress bar on the display. It is the small kitchen version of the range. This review is written from the published listing data. We do not own or operate the appliance, and where the listing contradicts itself we name the contradiction rather than resolving it.

Who this cooker is for and what it settles

The Duo Plus at three quarts settles the size question for one or two people. Instant Pot states it cooks for up to three, and the published dimensions of 10.2 inches deep by 11.5 wide by 11 high at 8.8 pounds mean it fits on a worktop that would not take the six quart model. For a small kitchen, a dorm, a caravan or a second cooker for side dishes, the smaller footprint is the entire argument.

Two design changes over the standard Duo are worth knowing about. The steam release switch is described as easier to operate and as resetting automatically when the lid is closed, which removes a step people commonly forget. And the display carries a full cooking progress bar showing which stage of a program the cooker has reached, rather than leaving you to guess whether it is still coming up to pressure.

If three quarts is too small, the six quart Instant Pot Duo is the volume selling size, and the Ninja Foodi FD401 goes to eight quarts with an air frying lid.

The specifications that matter

Published figures are a three quart capacity, 700 watts, a weight of 8.8 pounds and a food grade stainless steel inner pot with a tri ply bottom and an anti spin design that holds the pot still while you saute. The lid, inner pot and accessories are dishwasher safe. Instant Pot names the model as 110-0032-01 and gives country of origin as China. Over ten safety features are stated including overheat protection and a safe locking lid.

At 700 watts this draws under six amps on a household supply, which is modest enough to share a circuit comfortably.

The voltage is published two ways

The structured voltage field reads 110 volts. A feature bullet reads “Power supply 120V 60Hz”. Those are two different nominal figures for what is in practice the same North American supply, and appliances of this type are normally specified to work across that range, so this is unlikely to affect anything. It is worth naming because it is the sort of small inconsistency that should make you check any other number on the page rather than assume it is authoritative.

The nine in one count includes duplicates

The product is sold as 9-in-1. The feature bullet lists the functions as: pressure cook, slow cook, rice cooker, yogurt maker, steamer, saute pan, yogurt maker, sterilizer and food warmer. Yogurt maker appears twice in that list of nine. The product description does the same thing with rice cooker, naming it twice in its own list.

Count the distinct functions and you get eight, not nine. That does not make the cooker worse at any of them, and the sterilizer function is a genuine addition over the seven function Duo. But the headline number is padded by a copywriting error, and a buyer comparing a nine function model against a seven function one is comparing eight against seven.

What the smart programs actually give you

The 15 smart programs are preset time and pressure combinations, adjustable up or down, rather than different cooking methods. The appliance does the same thing in each case; the presets exist so you do not have to look up a starting time for common foods. Program counts are therefore a weak way to compare models, and on a three quart cooker they matter less still, because most presets assume larger quantities than this pot holds. Expect to adjust times downward and to use the manual setting once you have cooked a dish twice. The T-fal stovetop pressure cooker listed here takes the opposite approach with no programs at all.

Using it correctly

A pressure cooker holds a large volume of water hotter than boiling, and the hazards are steam and hot liquid rather than the appliance failing.

Keep hands, arms and face away from the steam release when venting. Escaping steam is hotter than boiling water and scalds quickly. The improved release switch makes the action easier, not safer: vent away from cabinets and away from anyone standing nearby, and reach in from the side rather than over the valve.

Never try to open the lid while the cooker is still under pressure. The locking lid exists to prevent this and it should never be tested. Wait for the float valve to drop.

Do not fill above the maximum line, and use considerably less than that for anything that foams or expands, such as beans, grains, pasta or apple sauce, because those can block the vent. Never run the cooker without liquid in the pot. And check the sealing ring and the vent before each use, because a perished ring or a blocked valve is behind most pressure cooker faults and both are visible in a few seconds.

On a three quart cooker the maximum fill line arrives sooner than people expect. Recipes written for six quart models routinely exceed it, so halve quantities rather than scaling by eye.

Limits and gaps in the published data

The listing does not publish the maximum operating pressure, which is the figure recipe timings actually depend on. It does not publish the sealing ring replacement interval, the availability of spare rings and gaskets, or a warranty term. It also does not state whether the sterilizer function is validated for anything in particular, which matters if you were considering it for baby bottles or preserving equipment rather than general cleaning.

The recorded rating is 4.7 out of 5 across 48,532 ratings, and the sales rank fields place the product 972nd across kitchen and dining and third within electric pressure cookers at the time of capture. Ranks move constantly and should be read as a snapshot.

Who should buy it and who should not

Buy it if you cook for one to three people, want a smaller footprint than the standard six quart cooker, and would use the progress display and the easier venting. Do not buy it for batch cooking or for a family, do not buy it as a pressure canner, and do not choose it over a seven function model on the strength of the nine function count, because two of those nine are the same thing listed twice. The rest of the assorted pressure related products here sit in the mixed shortlist section, well away from the pressure washer pages that make up most of this site.
