Water Supply: GPM, Hose Bib Flow and Why a Pressure Washer Starves and Pulses

A pressure washer does not make water. It takes whatever the hose bib delivers and raises the pressure of it. That means the GPM figure printed on the box is not a promise the machine makes, it is a demand the machine places on the plumbing. When the supply cannot meet that demand, the machine surges, pulses, loses pressure, and eventually damages its own pump.

The rated flow is a requirement, not an output

Every pressure washer specifies an inlet requirement, and some listings publish it plainly. The BILT HARD 3500 PSI listing states a minimum water input of 5 GPM at 20 PSI for a machine rated at 2.5 GPM output. That is not a contradiction. The margin exists because a pump needs the inlet to stay flooded under all conditions, including the moment the trigger opens.

As output rises, so does the demand. The Simpson ALH4440, listed at 4.0 GPM, needs a supply that many residential hose bibs cannot sustain. The DeWalt DXPW3400PRNB-S at a CETA certified 2.5 GPM is a more common household match. The corded electric listings mostly ask for less, between 1.1 and 2.3 GPM, which is one practical reason they are easier to feed than the gas listings.

Measuring what the bib actually delivers

The test is simple and worth doing before a machine is ordered rather than after. Attach the garden hose that will be used with the washer, open the bib fully, and fill a container of known volume while timing it. A five gallon bucket that fills in one minute indicates 5 GPM. Two minutes indicates 2.5 GPM.

The result should comfortably exceed the machine’s rated flow, not merely match it. A supply that measures 2.5 GPM feeding a machine rated at 2.5 GPM leaves no margin for a partially open valve, a warm day, or a neighbor’s irrigation running on the same main.

What restricts the supply

Hose diameter is the most common limiter. A standard five eighths inch garden hose carries less than a three quarter inch hose, and the gap widens as the hose gets longer. Several machines ship with an adapter for the larger size, including the Karcher K1700, which is listed with a three quarter inch garden hose adapter.

Length works against flow as well. Fifty feet of supply hose delivers noticeably less than twenty five feet of the same hose, and coiled hose left on a reel restricts more than hose laid out flat. Kinks are the fastest way to starve a pump, and a kink that forms behind the operator during work is invisible until the machine starts surging.

Older plumbing is a hidden constraint. Galvanized supply piping narrows internally over decades of corrosion, and a house with original galvanized lines can measure well below what its fixtures suggest. Properties on a well have a further limitation: the pump and pressure tank set a ceiling on sustained draw, and a pressure washer running continuously is an unusually steady load.

The inlet screen on the machine itself is the piece people forget. It filters grit out of the supply, it clogs, and a clogged screen produces exactly the same symptoms as an undersized hose. It should be removed and rinsed as routine maintenance.

Inlet pressure and water temperature limits

Machines also specify a maximum inlet pressure. The Sun Joe SPX3001 listing gives a maximum water inlet pressure of 0.7 MPa, which is roughly 100 PSI. Municipal supply above that figure needs a regulator.

Temperature limits matter too. The Greenworks Pro GPW3001 listing states a maximum inlet water temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold water machines are not built to accept hot supply, and feeding one from a hot tap damages seals.

How starvation announces itself

The classic symptom is pulsing. Pressure builds, drops, builds again, and the wand kicks in rhythm. What is happening is that the pump is momentarily drawing faster than the supply refills it, so it takes in air, loses prime, and recovers. Related symptoms are a machine that will not reach pressure at all, a motor that cycles on and off rapidly, and an audible rattle from the pump.

None of this is harmless. Running a pump with air in it, known as cavitation, erodes valves and seals from the inside. A machine that pulses should be shut down and the supply investigated before the session continues.

Purging air before every start

Manufacturers commonly specify the same sequence: connect the supply, open the bib fully, and squeeze the trigger with the machine switched off until water runs steadily and without bubbles from the wand. Only then start the motor or the engine. This fills the pump and the high pressure hose with water and removes the air that would otherwise be compressed and forced through the pump on startup.

The pump should never run dry, even briefly. Seal damage begins in seconds and it does not announce itself until pressure starts falling weeks later.

When there is no hose bib at all

Two approaches appear in this catalog. Some battery units draw from an open source: the RYOBI RY120350 listing describes a siphon hose that pulls from any fresh water source or connects to a standard garden hose. Others carry their own supply, such as the Fanttik NB8 Nano and its 2.1 gallon tank, although that unit is listed at 72 to 98 PSI and is a portable sprayer rather than a pressure washer in the usual sense.

Tank fed operation trades supply certainty for run time. A 2.1 gallon tank at 0.8 GPM is under three minutes of continuous trigger, which is fine for rinsing a bike and not enough for a driveway.

One more reason to read both published numbers

Where a listing publishes two flow figures, the higher one is often the least useful for sizing a supply. The Sun Joe SPX3000 listing states 1.2 GPM in its bullet points and 1.76 gallons per minute in its specification table. Sizing the supply against the larger figure builds in margin, which is the direction to err.

Sizing generously has a second benefit. A pump fed with comfortable margin runs cooler and cycles less, and the thermal relief valves fitted to many machines, which dump warm water once it has been recirculating too long, operate less often.

Safety while working on the supply side

Pressure remains stored in the high pressure hose after the motor stops. Shut the machine down, close the water supply, and squeeze the trigger to release that pressure before disconnecting any fitting. The jet must never be aimed at a person or an animal, because a high pressure stream can force water and contamination through skin and cause an injection injury, which is a medical emergency even when the wound looks trivial. Where a gas engine drives the pump, that engine emits carbon monoxide and must never be run indoors or in a garage, including with the door open. The manual for the specific machine governs its inlet requirements.
